A Call From Home
is the story of a woman doctor who leaves her
comfortable Boston suburb to bring disaster
relief to the people of Armenia and Karabagh
after the devastating earthquake of December
7,1988. The worldwide relief effort became one
of the largest ever seen. It was a news story
itself. But the earthquake wasn’t all.
By 1991 major events were rapidly tumbling one
upon the other --the Soviet Union began to disintegrate;
Armenia was blockaded by its neighbors; and
a war with Azerbaijan began over the independence
of Nagorno-Karabagh.
With each of her many
trips to the region over 10 years, Dr. Najarian
was drawn deeper and deeper into the lives of
the people she met -- the doctors who worked
under horrendous conditions; the generous families
who invited her to share what little they had;
and the patients she treated like the woman
reluctant to show her raw, swollen hands. Her
journals provide the record of those dark days
and describe the courage, dignity, and humor,
with which Armenians lived and survived. Their
poignant stores provide an intimate look at
these extraordinary people of the Caucasus.
